Anna Mae Rankin

Anna Mae Rankin, 94, died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, Clay Center, Kansas. She was born in Houlka, Mississippi to Oliver Steven "Dick" and Mattie Lorene (Glenn) Carr on November 30, 1912. She grew up on a cotton and cane farm with her brother and sister in Houlka. In 1921, the family moved to Friendship, Oklahoma where they lived on a farm. Anna Mae was an honor student and played varsity girls basketball at Friendship High School. She attended Weatherford Teachers College at Weatherford, Ok. During her spring semester of her freshman year, she accepted a teaching position as an elementary school teacher in Custer City, Ok. It was there she met and married Elmo C. Rankin on November 25, 1937. At that time only single teachers were employed so she was forced to resign after the wedding. She continued her academic work at Weatherford Teacher's College where she received a degree in Elementary Education. Anna Mae was a student, mother, & homemaker in Custer City while Elmo was involved in various businesses-banking, movie theater, newspaper, & grain elevator. In the summer of 1954, they moved to Clay Center, Ks. to be near Elmo's widowed mother. Anna Mae's hobbies were bridge, gardening, sewing, reading, & watching clouds. She was a member of the Clay Center First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Rankin; parents, Dick and Mattie Carr; brother, Richard Carr; & sister, Lois Wise. Survivors: Son: Kelly and JAnice Rankin, Vancouver, WA Son: Riley and wife Pam Rankin, Santa Rosa, CA Granddaughter: Stephanie Rankin, Kansas City Grandson: Brian Rankin, Kansas City Grandson: David & Angela Rankin of San Diego, CA Grandson: John Rankin, Clarks Fork, ID Granddaughter: Rachael (Mrs. Chris) Wheeler, of Vancouver, WA Granddaughter: Jennifer (Mrs. Jamie) Gleason of Pullman, WA four Great-grandsons. Graveside Services: Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, Kansas. Minister: Rev James Byers Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Kansas.
