Delbert Dale Schoning passed away on February 25, 2012 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Clay Center, KS on March 11, 1940 to Walter and Pauline Schoning. He attended Morganville Schools and graduated from Clay Center High School in 1958. Delbert married Joneen McDonald on February 3, 1961 and had three children Michael, Michelle, and Melissa. They made their home in Clay Center until 1966 when they moved to Iowa. Delbert became a salesman for Ralston-Purina feed company until he opened Schoning Feed and Supply in Grundy Center, IA with his father. They then moved to Olathe, KS where Delbert became an agent with Farm Bureau Insurance. He was an agent for 25 years until his retirement in 2010. Delbert and Joneen then took one more adventure and moved to Morrison, CO in November of 2010. Delbert loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed cooking and baking, watching KU basketball, going for morning walks and looking at the mountains. Whether it was hunting, fishing, working in the yard or walking Melissa's golden retrievers, he loved the outdoors. The family will have a visitation on Thursday, March 1, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Neill-Schwensen-Rook funeral home in Clay Center, KS. The funeral service will be Friday, March 2 at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Clay Center, KS.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Joneen of 51 years. His three children; Michael (Denise) Schoning of Gardner, KS, Michelle (Rick) Johnson of Ames, IA, and Melissa Schoning and Jon Tozier of Lakewood, Co. Five grandchildren; Lauren (Joe) Clark, Sara Schoning, Brittany Schoning, and Alec and Carson Johnson. One brother Doug (Polly) Schoning of Manhattan, KS, and a host of extended family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Walter and Pauline Schoning and his in-laws, John and Evelyn McDonald. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
He was a friend of many and a stranger to no one. He will be so greatly missed by his loved ones and anyone who was blessed to meet him.
