DOUGLAS FRED MARTIN, 56, of Clay Center passed away Sunday, December 27,
2009 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita Kansas. He was born October 18,
1953 in Clay Center Kansas, the son of Gene and Marilyn (Heikes) Martin.
Doug was raised in the Broughton area and graduated from CCCHS in 1971. He
graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1975 and was a Navy jet pilot until
1981. He earned his M.B.A. from Webster College and graduated from the
University of Kansas School of Law in 1984. He married Debra Weidman on
October 22, 1983 and she survives of the home. He was a Navy veteran of
Desert Storm and attained the rank of Captain. He was Assistant Attorney
General for the State of Kansas, Shawnee County Counselor, and in private law
practice in Topeka until moving to Clay Center, Kansas in 1996. Doug was the
Clay County Attorney from 1997 to 2005, and in private practice in Clay Center
with Bosch & Martin, L.L.C. In 2005 he joined the Pottroff Law Office in
Manhattan, Kansas. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and
former member of the Clay Center United Methodist Church. He was also a member
of the Lions Club and was former chairman of the 2nd District Republican
Party.
Survivors include his wife Debra Martin of Clay Center, sons Thomas Martin of
Wamego, Daniel and Joshua of Clay Center, a daughter Anne of Clay Center. A
brother Philip and wife Rolinda Martin of Clay Center, sister, Marita and
husband Brett Wolgast, Cedar Rapids, IA and parents, Gene and Marilyn Martin
of Clay Center.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 from 3-8pm at the
funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at
10:30 AM at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Clay Center, Kansas, with the
Rev. Grant Clay, Rev. Gerald Martin and Rev. Jim Heikes officiating. Burial
with Navy honors will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.
