George Whetstine

October 6, 1913 — September 5, 2010

George was raised in Clay County north of Green, KS on the family farm in the Goshen Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Wesley Chapel Church near Green. He married Helen Lippert on March 21, 1937 in Keats and they settled in the Peach Grove community in Riley County before moving to the Leonardville area where George farmed and worked as a union carpenter. He continued those careers when the family moved to Clay Center in 1961. Helen preceded him in death in 1999. George was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Riley County Farm Bureau, President of the local carpenter’s union and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He is also preceded by his parents and a brother, John. Survivors: Daughter: Nancy Ryan, Clay Center, KS Son: Doug Whetstine, Las Vegas , NV Special Daughter: Mary Whetstine, Denver, CO Grandchildren: Michelle and husband B.D. Horton, Overland Park, KS; Grant and wife Kristen Ryan, Lawrence, KS; Allison and husband Todd Abplanalp, Kansas City, MO Cassandra and husband Garrett Croom, Aurora, CO. He took great pride in his great-grandchildren: Katie, Maggie and Jonathan Horton; Olivia and Jack Ryan; Ryan Abplanalp; Ethan Croom Sister-In-Law: Anna Larson, Overland Park, KS Sister-In-Law: Leona Whetstine, Apache Junction, AZ Funeral Services: Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Clay Center, Kansas. Officiating the service will be the Rev. James Byers. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 3-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Leonardville Nursing Home c/o the funeral home.
