IRIS KATHLEEN KUHLMAN died October 11, 2013 at Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center, KS at the age of 84. She was born on July 3, 1929 in Oak Hill, Kansasa the daughter of Lawrence Gray and Agnes Carlson. Iris and her parents moved to Clifton, KS where she resided with her six brothers and one sister. On June 4th, 1950, she married Henry W. Kuhlman from Linn, KS. She and Henry lived in their home for over 60 years, where they raised their four children. She was baptized at Oak Hill Presbyterian Chaurch oon July 8th, 1933 at the age of four. As a teenager, she became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Clifton. After she was married, she joined the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Linn. Iris attended Oak Hill grade school, grades 1-4, and finished 4th grade at Clifton. During her high school years, Iris sang in the girl's glee club and played clarinet. She graduated from high school in 1947 and attended three summer sessions at Kansas State University in Manhattan. At the age of 18, she taught at Parallel Elementary, a one room rural schoolhouse. After teaching there for one year she started teaching grades 5 through 7 at Clifton Elementary and taught there for two years. Iris was a dedicated mother and wife who volunteered on many occasions for projects in the community. When her children were young, she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She served as secretary and president of the women's group WELCA and was secretary and treasurer of Cluster a women's group of 17 churches in the district. She also served as secretary on the church council for 6 years. Iris was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and one sister. Survivors include: Husband: Henry Kuhlman, Linn, KS Daughter: Laura and husband Kelly Baker, Norman, OK Daughter: Teresa and husband Rich Hohman, Palm City, FL Son: Rolf and wife Joy Kuhlman, Omaha, NE Son: Henry Jay and wife Kelly Kuhlman, Maui, HI Grandchildren: many grand and great-grandchildren A memorial service will be held at a later date Memorials can be made to Linn American Legion in honor of Iris's five brothers who bravely served our country. Memorials may be sent in care of the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, 918 7th St., Clay Center, KS 67432
