Janis Kay Anderson, born June 9, 1954, passed away on May 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, loyalty, and devotion to the people and animals she loved. A lifelong member of the Clay Center, Kansas community, Janis attended local schools and grew up deeply connected to Hayes Methodist Church, where she often shared her musical gifts as a piano player during services.

Janis was adopted at a young age by her loving parents, Roy and Diana Anderson, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother, Charles Roy Anderson of Topeka. Throughout her life, Janis was supported by a close circle of friends who became family: the Tarbet’s—her “New England family” she met during her college days at KU; her longtime friend and coworker Ben from Lawrence; and Elaine Harrington of Wichita, who stood by Janis through many of life’s challenges and milestones.

A proud graduate of the University of Kansas, Janis earned her degree in physical education and remained a devoted Jayhawk fan throughout her life. Before attending KU, she worked as a nurse at Wakefield Rehabilitation, where her gentle nature and steady presence brought comfort to many. She also worked at Medford Manor, the former hospital in Clay Center, often riding her motorcycle to and from her apartment south of the library. Those who knew her from that era fondly recalled that she was “good at lifting people’s spirits.”

Janis later dedicated many years of service to Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence, Kansas, where she was known for her reliability, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the residents she cared for.

In her youth, Janis was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, an experience that shaped her lifelong values of service, integrity, and community. She held a deep love for animals—especially her dogs, who were her constant companions and greatest joy.

Graveside services will be held at Hayes Cemetery in Clay Center, Kansas, on September 5 at 10:00 a.m., where family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and lay her to rest.

In honor of Janis’s lifelong love for animals, donations may be made to a no‑kill animal shelter in her name.
