June Buche

d. June 1, 2017

June Opal Turner was born on June 5, 1930 and died at St. Luke's hospital in Kansas City, MO. on June 1, 2017. She was born at the farm home of her parents, Harry Lewis Turner and Neva Gertrude Stout Turner near Vine Creek, Kansas. She attended elementary school at Ackley, Rock Hill, Wide Range, and Sunny Side. Her freshman year was spent at Minneapolis High School and then she graduated from Miltonvale High School in May of 1949.  The values that she carried throughout her life were deeply instilled by her parents. She learned many homemaking skills for her mom and the greatest of these was sewing. The tragic loss of their father when she was 16 drew the family bonds even tighter; June and her four siblings remained very close throughout their entire lives. Even in their later years, Sunday afternoons brought them together for dominoes, visiting and yummy deserts! As a young woman, June worked for X & Eunice Buche doing house work and cooking. She also worked part time at the Palmer and Phelps Agency in Miltonvale. Her first date with FX Buche was in February of 1947 when they went to a basketball game in Bennington. They dated a year and a half before they married in June of 1948; June and FX were married at her mother’s farm home with both of their families present. FX and June made their first home in a little four room house in Miltonvale which June described as a “fixer-upper”. FX served in World War II and after returning home, he was unexpectedly reactivated from the inactive reserves and sent to Korea. In support of her husband's military service, she joined the VFW Auxiliary in Miltonvale. In 1954 they moved into the home on First Street where they resided the rest of their lives. This house was built for FX’s grandparents, Gus and Birdie Buche. The exterior bricks for the house were poured by the stone masons on site which gives the house its unique look. FX and June spent 35 happy years together and were blessed with three children: Harry Fx, Shirley Jean and Trudy Beth. As a family, they delivered the Salina Journal to customers in Miltonvale to teach ethical work values to their children. They were “hands-on” parents who were very involved in their kids’ activities. FX was Scoutmaster for troop #37 and supervised Harry as he earned his Eagle Scout Award. Harry, Shirley and Trudy were all in 4-H, and June was the sewing leader who taught her girls and many of the teenagers in Miltonvale how to sew. June was heartbroken when FX lost his life in an accident on October 31, 1983, but just like her mother before her who was widowed far too soon, she picked up the pieces of her life and with an abiding faith in God’s grace drew her family even closer. June was not only an attentive housewife and mother, but she also worked outside the home. She was employed at Jones’ Sundry in the late 50’s, and then several years later, June began to work as a cashier at Turner’s Grocery until it closed in 1992. She spent the next 19 years sewing medical appliances at Scott’s Specialty in Clay Center. Just before she celebrated her 81st birthday, she decided it was finally time to retire. In addition to her full time jobs, she also was an excellent seamstress who made or altered clothing for many family members and people in Miltonvale. At Scott’s Specialty she rarely, if ever, failed to meet her daily quota to sew the bindings on hundreds of arm braces.  June’s steadfast faith in God was a centerpiece of her life. June was a member of the Miltonvale Presbyterian Church until it closed in December of 2012. At the Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school and was a long time member of the choir that later became the Miltones as the church membership declined. After her church closed, she attended both the Wesleyan and United Methodist churches in Miltonvale. Masonic participation gave her the opportunity to work with others in fraternal love to achieve the common good. In the late 1960’s when the Concordia Order of Rainbow for Girls needed a Mother Advisor for their chapter, June volunteered to fill that role for a few years even though she was a working mom. She was a life-time member of the Clay Center Chapter #180 Order of the Eastern Star. In January of 2003 she received her 50 year pin in a special ceremony honoring her years of membership; she held many offices within the Chapter, but her favorite was serving as Chaplain. The friendships that she developed in Eastern Star were such a blessing to her. June took the values she learned as a child, combined them with the lessons of the Great Depression, and she lived her life as a faithful servant of God. She has now been reunited with her parents, her beloved husband, FX, and brother Waine.
