Margret Ann “Peggy” Cox of Clay Center and Wakefield passed away at Clay County Medical Center on 23 November, following a short illness. She was born at the Marine Corps Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 7 March 1931, the youngest daughter of LTC George Henry and Pearl Mason Morse. She grew up in Gloucester Massachusetts, and was a member of the Cape Ann Swim team. After graduating from Gloucester High School she entered the US Army Woman’s Army Corps. While in the Army, she met and married her solider-husband Clanton B Cox and travelled throughout Europe and the United States. While an Army Wife, Peggy contributed by serving as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader in Germany, Texas, California, and Maine. A graduate of the University of Maine – Augusta, where she was selected into membership of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Peggy served as a Social Worker for many years specializing in long term care for the elderly in the Camden-Rockport Maine area. A 50+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Peggy is a four-time Past Worthy Matron of Lincoln Chapter 112 in Lincoln, Maine and Ocean View Chapter 201 of Camden-Rockport Maine. She was also a 7th Degree Grange in Rockport, ME. A stanch member of the Episcopal Church since early childhood, Peggy joined St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Clay Center, after moving to Kansas in 2009. She was a member of Cursillo, serving on the Secretariat for two years. Peggy loved dogs and enjoyed the companionship of a series of Cocker Spaniels but especially her life companion Homer. She also loved to knit and crochet and each year provided hats and mittens for a school in Maine. She is survived and will be missed by her children, Michael Cox of Wakefield, Marla Landry of Old Town, Me; Marshall Cox of Augusta, Me; Mitchell Cox of Washington, Maine; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. At her request, no memorial services will be held. Peggy chose to be cremated with her ashes scattered at the family beach on Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
