Orville Lewis Chartier, known to his numerous friends as “Doc,” died May 9, 2018, at the age of 90. He was born on a farm in Colfax Township in Cloud County on Aug. 27, 1927, the first child of Lewis and Blanche Chartier. The family later moved to a farm west of Oak Hill, where Doc grew up. He later settled in Oak Hill, where he operated Chartier Repair, serving the area by fixing cars, trucks, tractors, combines and other farm equipment from 1960 until his retirement. His shop became an informal gathering place where locals came for refreshments and a friendly word. Many visitors to Oak Hill found their way to Doc’s door to get directions or information on the area. Always a public servant, Doc served terms as the mayor of Oak Hill and chief of the local volunteer fire department. He is survived by his daughter Denise Dorcey and son-in-law Michael Dorcey of Emporia; sister Fern Kusy Solbach of Topeka; brother Keith Chartier of Topeka; and grandchildren John “Jack” Dorcey and Anne Dorcey of Emporia. Doc was preceded in death by his father, mother and two younger siblings who died in infancy, Edrus Elmo and Leona Ione. A celebration of Doc’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 27, at the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church.
