Patrick Kelly Damman was born on 17th April 1973 to Jerald and Irma Damman. As the first son in the family after three daughters, you can imagine what a big deal his arrival was for the family. This largely defined Pat and the space he occupied throughout his life. He was one to watch, and to watch out for. Pat’s childhood was filled with all the outdoor fun, mischief, and mishaps that only a Kansas wild child could experience. He also grew up learning the culture of farming from his father and grandfathers, which shaped who he was and how he would spend the rest of his life. This experience also exposed him to his grandfathers’ many stories of the past, which he cherished and which we all enjoyed through his skilled storytelling over the years.
With that foundation, Pat grew up to be deeply honest, loyal and trustworthy, with a strong moral code. He had big ideas, big opinions and, most of all, a very big heart. He loved his family, friends and community deeply, and while we were all loved by Pat in his own unique way, his children were the most important people in the world to him. Kansas, Polly and Kyzler were by far his greatest joy and achievement. While he enjoyed spending time with friends, his time with his children was his most comforting and precious.
Pat was a man of many hobbies and interests; he was a cook, baker, beekeeper, pen maker, gardener and tree planter, among other things. His love of cooking was shaped by his mother, Irma. His many projects concocted as joint ventures with his father, Jerald. One of their greatest achievements was the house he built with his father, which reflects both their skill as craftsmen and their appreciation of their family history. In more recent years, Pat’s interest in hobbies and love for the outdoors extended to him becoming a Harley Davidson enthusiast, and he enjoyed his Sturgis trips and travelling with his Clifton brothers.
Pat’s love for farming defined both him and his career. His BS in Agricultural Education and his MS in Agriculture at KSU were followed by many years extending his farming knowledge to Cloud County Community College, the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission & Producers Association, Hanover High School and as a crop adjuster. Pat was able to incorporate his love for travel into his work. At CCCC, he led many student field trips including travels to Hawaii, New Orleans and California. As Field Director, Kansas Grain Sorghum, his interests extended internationally to include trips to China and Peru.
We are saying goodbye to Pat too soon, which is often the case for those whose flame burns brighter than the rest of us. We will remember him through his stories, his good taste in music, his cooking, and his trees. We’ll also be reminded that if you are going to love, do it deeply and enjoy the view along the way.
How you spend this life will someday be defined by everything that is remembered in the dash you leave behind. - Adapted from The Dash by Linda Ellis
