Pauline Snodgrass, 102, a resident of Clay Center for 76 years, died peacefully at the Presbyterian Manor on November 23. Pauline Margaret Lueck was born on August 22, 1911 in Holton, Kansas. Her parents were Charles Daniel and Bertha Longley Lueck. She moved to Netawaka when she was a child and was a graduate of Netawaka High School. After attending Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, Pauline became a teacher in Netawaka, where she met her future husband Wayne Snodgrass, whom she married in 1933. Their life began in Eskridge where Wayne was an instrumental music teacher. They then moved to Hiawatha where they remained until 1937 when they relocated to Clay Center. After Wayne’s death in 1969 Pauline attended Kansas State University where she received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Her overriding passion was the nurturing and development of young children within the community. During the years when Pauline’s children were young, she operated a nursery school in her home. In 1972 she founded the Clay County Child Care Center which was located in the Presbyterian Church. Pauline was an accomplished pianist and was actively involved in music all her life. In addition to teaching piano and voice, she also directed church choirs in the Methodist and Baptist churches in Clay Center. She was one of the original members of the Pawnee Mental Health Services and served on the board for 34 years. She was a member of PEO for 70 years and was also actively involved in NEA, PEO, WSCS, Rotary Club and Lions Club. In addition to her husband, Pauline was preceded in death by her three siblings: Laura Ann Lueck, Charles Daniel Lueck, Jr. and Henry Longley Lueck and two grandsons: Morris Ira Block and Larry Charles Snodgrass. Pauline is survived by six children: Carol Hall (Richard), Washington DC; C.L. (Judy), Clay Center; Kathleen Clinesmith (Ben), New York City; Kenny, Austin TX; David (Cynthia), Tacoma WA and Diane Sollenberger (Joe Morrissey), St. Paul MN., and seven grandchildren: Laddi Oliphant, Miriam Block, Doug Snodgrass, Libby Snodgrass, Ellen Clinesmith, Dana Landes and Clayton Sollenberger, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A service will be held at the Clay Center United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 A.M. Respect calls will be held Tuesday, December 3 from 3-8 PM at the funeral home The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Clay County Child Care Center, the Clay County Arts Council, the Pawnee County Mental Health Services, the Clay Center United Methodist Church or the Presbyterian Manor.
