William George Winslow, age 87, died at Clay County Medical Center on October 1, 2022. He was born in Liberty, NE to Richard and Lydia (Caulkins) Winslow on November 6, 1934. William was a graduate of Barnston High School in Nebraska. He joined the United States Army in 1952 and completed basic training at Camp Roberts in California. William then completed aviation mechanic’s and qualified on the M-1 rifle as a marksman. He was assigned to various units, including 1905 th , 811 th aviation engineering battalions in California and Seoul Korea for 3 years as well as various other units in Germany in the 50’s through 1965. In 1965, he was assigned as a senior mechanic in Fort Hood, TX then as a section chief to the 809 th Engineering Battalion. William deployed to Thailand for a year. He returned from deployment to Fort Leonard Wood as section chief and was then moved to Baumholder, Germany until 1969. William ended his active-duty career in 1970 after a seven-month deployment to Phu Bai, Vietnam. He earned four good conduct and campaign medals. William enlisted in the Kansas National Guard in 1971 where he earned a meritorious service medal. He exited his military career as a sergeant first class. During various points in his military career, William also attended some classes at Kansas State University, and received a diploma in Computer Repair from international correspondence school in Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Roberts on November 4, 1956. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2019. He completed 80 hours as an instructor for engine rebuild techniques at Salina Vo-tech after his time in the service. William worked for and retired from RSMS on Fort Riley. He also worked for CASA for a few years as well as various other jobs. William was a member of the Masons. Though sometimes viewed as a “Grumpy Old Man”, William had the biggest heart and would help anyone. He loved going to the hospital for breakfast in the morning and visiting, he never met a stranger. William also had a passion for genealogy, but most of all he loved his furry companions, Lily and Ginger.  In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents and brother: Harold Winslow.

Sister: Linda Davis of Auburn, NE

Brother-in-law: Jerry Roberts of Ada, KS

18 Grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews

Dogs: Lily and Ginger

Visitation: October  7, 2022 from 9:00 AM until service time at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home

Funeral Services: Friday, October 7, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home Clay Center, KS

Lunch will be held from 11:00 to Noon at the Clay Center Covenant Church, Clay Center, KS

Burial: Friday, October 7, 2022, at 1:00 PM at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS

Memorials: Clay Center Zoo or Children's Mercy c/o the funeral home
